Fleet data: The Norway-class was developed at the San Francisco ship yards to supplement and replace the Miranda and Excelsior-class vessels in several varied but specific roles. Primarily a workhorse class the Norway is often found running patrols along border regions, performing long-term stellar cartography missions and ferrying supplies and personnel to Starbases and far-flung colonies. In threat response situations the Norway has proven to be a credible replacement for the older Excelsior-class vessels. In fleet actions the Norway’s excellent impulse system makes it ideal for line plugging duties, patrolling the rear of the line and rushing at the point where the enemy strikes. This also makes the ship well suited to making strikes at the enemy’s line, however the ship’s lower capacity for damage mean that this maneuver must be made with sufficient support from larger more durable vessels.
With recent threats to the Federation and starship losses in actions against the Borg and Dominion, Starfleet has ordered a large batch of Norway-class vessel to be produced, often replacing lost Excelsior-class starships.
Noteworthy vessels/service records/encounters: U.S.S. Norway, prototype; U.S.S. Budapest, part of fleet that repelled Borg invasion of 2373.
