DJs

"Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ..."
"MM-sum, mm-sum, mm-sum..."

Some people seem to quite like the quiet life. You're not one of them. As a DJ, you're out 24 hours a day, all over the place, living life to the max. If there's a place to be, you're there, and you're probably playing the music. If there's a song to sing, you know it backwards in Latin. And most of all, if there's a bad 70s track to remix, you do it in style.

What You Look Like

If you got on stage looking like some dudey MallBrat, you'd never be taken seriously. So, you take care over what you're seen wearing. Club culture changes rapidly, but usually demands shades, maybe a cool suit if you're DJ-ing, or combat trousers and a shirt if you're just on the floor. Away from the club, you wear whatever casual clothing is in. You are a walking definition of vanity.

SubCulture

Club culture is evolving fast, so you are too. All members of the YoGang have knowledge of the latest places to be seen, and you share this through your cellphones and pagers. Communication is the key to getting to the best places before everyone else, and looking as if you've known about it all your life. Thus, you maintain a powerful network, with 'operators' on call 24 hours a day. It sounds extreme, but then so is club culture.

Drug use is rife, in fact almost the norm. Drugs are seen as natural ways to enhance the lifestyle you have - no regard for the consequences. Deaths are high, but then so are you. What's the point in living if you live like a corpse?, you ask. It does little to convince the coroner. Casual sex is also commonplace, as are the diseases that go with it.

Whether you actually are a DJ or not, your life revolves around music. Most members work in the days in music stores. Almost every night, you'll go to a club. Being constantly in touch with the latest sounds is very important to you.

Your gang is unusual in that your way of life requires considerable upkeep, both in financial and human terms. Going clubbing every night can become very expensive, which is why most members work, unlike other gangs' members. Heavy drug and alcohol use takes its toll on your body... after a few years of this routine, you know you'll be a wreck, and probably end up in a detox clinic somewhere, if your parents can afford it (or care enough).

Belonging

It's cool to know someone, so you like to know there will always be someone you can sit next to if the need arises. Therefore, you can count on most DJs to at least tolerate your presence. To become a DJ, you just had to hang at one of the latest joints for a while, and show that you had a skill for mixing top tunes, an appreciation for music, or could dance like an ace.

Once you're in, you have to stay cool, or be rejected by all. No-one will be seen with you if your clothes are out of date, or your slang is yesterday's stuff. Anyone rejected will find it hard to get back in, but not impossible; clubbers memories tend to be poor. If you show that you've changed, are back up to date, and perhaps you mix a new track, all will be forgiven. Life is too short for bitterness.

Allies & Enemies

Anyone who shares your love of the fast life, such as the Lookers and GlitterKids, is a friend to some extent. If they're cool, you like them.

Anyone who isn't, is out.

On the whole, the gang tends to stick together, with clubs often being the domain of your gang alone. Other gangs find it hard to fit in with your way of life, out all night, working mindless jobs all day. As such, you don't come into contact with other gangs too often, and aren't involved in gang culture to any noticeable degree.

Slang

Rapidly evolving, so you just say anything that seems cool... no-one will be listening too hard anyway.

YoGang Skill: Beat Master (REF/EMP)

Your knowledge of the latest happenings, and how to put yourself around to look great. Club culture personified, and everything that goes with it.

If you actually DJ at a club, use Beat Master + REF to determine how well you mix tracks on the night. For every additional success point you might achieve, you mix an inspired track and the night gets successively better. Failure results in the music sounding average, and your bookings begin to tail off as word of your mixing gets around.

If you're just out clubbing, use Beat Master + EMP to determine how well you dance, how well you get on with people, and how up to scratch your slang and outfits are. A roll must be made if you attend especially hot events. Failure means you are shunned for embarassing the host... outstanding successes mean you define a new fashion on the spot.

If You're a DJ

Pick four things...

Shades
Cellphone
Club contacts
Underground contacts
Designer drugs
Combat pants
Familiarity with a bouncer
